Annual General Meeting September 24, 2016

September 10, 2016  |  Beginner Band, Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Public  |  No Comments

Members of the Cochrane Music Society,

We’re happy to announce that we shall be holding our annual general meeting on September 24th at 3pm in the Bow Valley High School music room. Each year we hold an annual general meeting where we have a brief report on the state of the society and then elect members to the board of directors. This year’s AGM will be a short intermission during our Jumpstart start-of-year workshop.  It’s one of the few occasions where band and choir members are able to get together as a group. Members of Riverside Jazz are strongly encouraged to come and join us during the AGM. We will provide coffee/juice and cookies and need your input.

For those new to our group, Jumpstart allows us to spend a few hours as a group, focusing on learning technique and repertoire that will serve us through the rest of the term.  Jumpstart runs from 1pm to 5pm, with a break for beverages, a little snack, and a short AGM.

We are very lucky to have a healthy music society, and that because members, just like you, have offered-up their time to volunteer. This year, we have a number of vacancies on the board, and we’re looking for new members to help keep our organization running. We’re looking for 3-4 members from choir, 3-4 members from band and 2-3 members from jazz. If you have not participated on the board in recent years, I ask you to please offer to help out. We really need you!

Acclaimed Saxophonist with quartet playing Calgary Oct 9th, 2015

Scott Marshall returns to Calgary with his critically acclaimed Jazz quartet Friday night (Oct 9, 9pm) at Lolita’s Lounge (1413 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta T2G 0T4). The performance features Scott Marshall on saxophones, Nick Fraser on drums, Adrean Farrugia on piano and Wes Neal on bass. Expect to be blown away by incredible music and musicianship. “Scott Marshall’s CDs (available on iTunes) are beautifully crafted straight-ahead jazz. His live performances are memorable because he takes time to provide background and insight into his compositions. As a musician, he’s a master player. When playing with this quartet, he simply soars. Highly recommended for jazz lovers.” — Henry Bland (tuba, Band on the Bow)

This is a special invitation to attend an Open House showing the conceptual design for a Cochrane Community Arts Centre. Many of you have shared your vision for an arts centre with us in the past either through surveys or by attending a workshop or interview with the architect this past year.

The Feasibility Study is now completed and was presented to and accepted by town council on September 27th and is available online for downloading at the following URL:  http://www.artscochrane.com/uploads/events/2010artscenterstudy.pdf

We would be very happy to discuss this study and to hear your comments at one of the two upcoming Open Houses.

Here is  a brief description of the current status of the project as well as a Volunteer Sign-Up form, if you’d like to become more involved in this exciting project.

Hope to see you at the Open House !

Saturday October 2

Workshop        1:00pm – 5:00pm

BBQ & Social    5:00pm

Rob Billington and the guest conductor will each have time with both ensembles and will focus on pieces that we are preparing for our concerts. The workshop will help us to develop our ability to express the interpretation that each conductor brings to the music.

A delicious BBQ supper and fun social will follow the workshop. Take advantage of this opportunity to get to know people from other ensembles.

The whole event is free!

CMS is funding this workshop for its members. The only request is a potluck donation to the supper (band members please bring a salad, choir members please bring a dessert) to share with your musical friends.

Registration deadline is September 20, 2010.

Jumpstart Workshop 2010 will only run with a high level of participation. Membership fees must be paid to register.  Either respond to the news post, or print and complete the poster-form and give it to your ensemble representative.
